The days of cheap energy and cheap oil are over. We cannot continue to to rely on foreign oil and to empower out enemies by subsidizing their activities through trillion dollar oil purchases. If we do, we will be living in an energy poor, third world country, called America. – Robert C. Hackney, Executive Director, Alternative Energy Association.

THE ALTERNATIVE ENERGY INDUSTRY

Renewable resources and increased energy efficiency comprise the solution to the problems of “peak oil” and global warming.

Solar, wind, bio-fuels and other forms of renewable energy sources comprise a growing vibrant industry, and one that will grow exponentially over the next few years. The combination of clean, green power with increased energy efficiency, is the only way to break our dependence on oil and other fossil fuels, and the only way to preserve the future for our children and their children.

Solar  Photovoltaic (PV) cells convert sunlight directly to electricity. Homes and offices can be run on solar power. New products have been developed that integrate solar panels into roofing shingles and windows. Commercial solar production, such as Nevada Solar One, a 64 megawatt plant, and Nellis Air Force Base, a 15 megawatt plant, are becoming more popular.

Wind Power  Commercial wind farms are estimated to presently be a $17 billion/year industry. Many experts believe this to be the world’s cheapest and fastest-growing new energy producer.

Bio-Fuels  Soy diesel and corn-based ethanol are increasing in use. Cellulosic bio-fuels made from plant waste are advancing in technology. Easily grown perennials like switchgrass, kudzu, algae are also being used.

Geothermal  Geothermal technology uses steam from the Earth’s core to create energy in more than 20 countries worldwide. This technology provides valuable supplemental heat in winter and base-line cooling in summer.

Ocean Power  The power of the oceans’ waves, tides and currents is being harvested with new technologies that take advantage of the ongoing activity of the ocean

Conservation  By the use of increased efficiency, we can conserve energy. Since methods of better insulation in our buildings, use of different construction products, moe widespread use of mass transportation and changing to more energy efficient appliances can reduce our dependence on fossil fuels.
